SUMMARY:Talk About Bach
DESCRIPTION:Join New Hampshire cellist\, Andrew Koutroubas\, to experience Bach’s intimate\, and timeless “Suites for Unaccompanied Cello” performed on a historical\, gut strung\, cello typical of Bach’s time (1685-1750). \nThrough these cello suites\, Bach unites varied cultures and styles by including six pieces in each suite characteristic to those different cultures. Each suite begins with a prelude – a meandering\, wandering fantasia traversing the many colors\, tonalities\, and range of the cello. Followed by five dances. \nBefore the performance\, enjoy light refreshments while Andrew Koutroubas gives a brief talk about Bach’s life\, the time in which he lived\, and the varied characteristics and dances of Germany\, France\, Spain\, and Italy represented in Bach’s cello suites. \nGenerously hosted by the Hancock Historical Society\, this evening will welcome you to the Orland Eaton room on the second floor ballroom of the Charles Symonds house\, built 1808-1809. Home to the HHS Museum since 1903\, the house has served as a residence\, tavern\, dormitory and boarding house. This performance\, including the pre-concert talk\, will run approximately one hour and thirty minutes. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, however tickets are limited\, and online RSVP is required.

SUMMARY:Baroque Echoes from Bolivia & Perú
DESCRIPTION:This concert\, presented by Instituto Cervantes in NYC\, explores the unique sound world that emerged in 17th‑ and 18th‑century Bolivia and Peru\, where European Baroque styles blended with Indigenous musical traditions. Jesuit churches and missions became centers of artistic creation\, employing composers such as Juan de Araujo and Domenico Zipoli\, who taught and collaborated with local musicians. Their influence can be heard in the vibrant works of composers like Andrés Flores and José de Orejón y Aparicio\, whose music reflects both European technique and American creativity.

SUMMARY:Silentwoods Collective: Lessons for a King
DESCRIPTION:June 23-25\nSOHIP Boston Summer Series\nSilentwoods offers a new program showcasing the innovation and virtuosity that flourished in the middle years of France’s ancien régime. French composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries—and their English counterparts across the Channel—addressed the crushing authority and repression of their time through music. These humble and most obedient musical servants (as they were obliged to designate themselves on their publications’ title pages) wove cautionary tales and reflection into their work\, implicitly reminding rulers of their own fragility\, moral responsibility\, and temporal existence. The works of Clérambault\, Rameau\, Rebel\, Barriere\, Purcell\, and Locke draw on mythology and rhetoric to navigate an environment of social hegemony. Hidden within these gorgeous pieces\, we find cryptic warnings to rulers on the dangers of hubris and greed\, as well as messages of hope that humanity will triumph over cruelty. \n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, June 23\, 7:30 pm\nFlint hall at St. Anne’s in-the-Fields\n147 Concord Rd.
